Half-day
Historic City Tour - PTE001
A
must-see for history buffs, our half-day city tour starts
at Panama La Vieja, the first official city founded
by Europeans on the Pacific coast of the Americas and the
starting point of the treasure trails that crossed the isthmus
to the Caribbean. This city was attacked and looted by Pirate
Henry Morgan in 1671. We'll walk among the stone walls and
remnants of what was once considered the richest city in the
Americas. From here we will drive through the high-rise district
of the city, along the bay of Panama and into historic Casco
Antiguo --dating from the 1670's. Casco Antiguo became
the new Panama City of the times and was never successfully
attacked, being protected by a wall that surrounded the new
settlement. Here we'll take a look at the Golden Altar,
one of the few testaments to all the wealth that made its
way through this city. Casco Antiguo is the home of the "Flat
Arch", famous for being a strong argument in favor of
the United States´s decision to build the canal in Panama.
We'll walk along the French Plaza - a monument to the French
canal effort and take a panoramic look of the modern city
from this vantage point as well as the ships that are anchored
in the bay awaiting transit of the canal. We conclude this
tour by visiting the InterOceanic Canal Museum that
is housed in the same building that was the original headquarters
for the French canal building effort in the 1880´s. The museum
is beautifully restored and presents a broad perspective of
the historical development of Panama from its Spanish colonial
days to the completion of the canal in 1913.
Minimum of 2 people. Includes museum entry fees.
Tour is approximately 4 ½ hours.
